About Dara
Nearly everything about my life so far has been unconventional. At first it just kind of seemed to work out that way. Now I’m striving to achieve more of an “unconventional by design” sort of theme.
When I was 13, I was diagnosed with a genetic liver disease. It affected me off and on for several years after I graduated from college. Basically, though, I was the person who was always sick. In 1995, this identity was transformed when I got a liver transplant. Now I became someone who was healthy and no longer felt limited by sickness. Soon after, I followed the path that I had always wanted- I attended medical school and became a doctor. Then I started a general surgery residency.
But then, I realized that being a surgeon in particular, and a doctor in general, just wasn’t a great fit for me- or for the life I wanted to live. I want to be able to have the flexibility to go off on all kinds of adventures- and not just in two week vacation increments.
I’ve always been someone who knows that, once my mind is made up to do something, I can make it happen. Sometimes it takes a while, and sometimes there are obstacles. Living your best life is a lot like climbing a mountain. I know because I’ve climbed Mt Kilimanjaro (or almost made the summit, anyway)
I believe that if we approach life the same way we would approach a mountain climb, we’d all be a lot happier. I hope help people discover new ways of thinking about life and new beliefs that will transform their experience of life.
I’m excited about your trip. Can’t wait to hear about it!
